Positive Discipline for Young Children

If you care for children under the age of 10 you really need to read, 1-2-3 Magic by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D.  It is a wonderful positive discipline strategy that can easily be implemented by anyone. I am currently reading this discipline strategy book at the recommendation of a teacher friend of mine. I must say I am very impressed with the ease at which the whole system can be implemented. Dr. Phelan uses an incredible amount of common sense that I believe will make life with your children so much more enjoyable. The program is broken down into three easy steps that can be implemented by parents, nannies, teachers and grandparents. Step 1: Controlling Obnoxious Behavior: Learn an amazingly simple discipline technique to get children to STOP doing what you don’t want them to do such as whining, arguing, tantrums, etc. Step 2: Encouraging Good Behavior: Learn several effective methods to get the children in your care to START doing what you do want them to do such as cleaning their room, going to bed, homework, etc. Step 3: Strengthening Your Relationship: Learn four powerful ways to reinforce positive bonds between yourself and the kids you care for. This method is kind, respectful and does not damage a child’s self esteem. It is what I like to call Parent-Led Parenting. This book is written in a way that will benefit a nanny or parent. I feel it is an invaluable resource to for you to have. I highly recommend! Be sure to check out my upcoming blog post where I will be talking about parenting styles and how they relate to your children’s future ability to make good decisions.
